The Effect of Regional Factors on Youth Suicide Rates

Abstract
The purpose of this study is investigate the regional factors affecting youth suicide rates. Six-year youth suicide rates data (2011 to 2016) were collected from the Statistics Korea to identify the relationship between youth suicide rates and demographic, economic, social disorganization, and health-welfare related factors. The results of this study are as follows. First, the descriptive statistical analysis based on geographical information showed that youth suicide rates in rural area was higher than metropolitan cities. Second, the socioeconomic characteristics affected youth suicide rates and suicide occurrence. Third, the demographic structure influenced the suicide rate of adolescents, and the poverty rate influenced the increase in suicide rate and suicide rate of male youth. Fourth, social welfare spending had a negative effect on youth suicide rate. Based on these results, the suggestions are as follows. community indicators related to youth suicide rates should be managed consistently. Second, the suicide prevention service for youth and the social policies of local governments should be integrated.
